Ministry of Agriculture

  • The function of the Ministry of Agriculture is enabled under the Agriculture Act (CAP 318).
  • It is mandated to promote and facilitate production of food and agricultural raw materials for food security and incomes; advance agro-based industries and agricultural exports; and enhance sustainable use of land resources as a basis for agriculturak enterprises.
  • The Ministry's mission is to improve the livelihoods of Kenyans by promoting competitive agriculture through creation of enabling environment, provision of support services and ensuring sustaninable natural resources

Situational Analysis:

  • Agriculture as the mainstay of the Kenyan economy, directly contributing 26% of the GDP annually and another 25% indirectly - is isolated by the country's Vision 2030 as a key sector in the strategy that will drive the country into realizing the targeted middle-income status.
  • The Agriculture sector us therefore expected to open new frontiers and provide opportunities for growth.
  • The sector accounts for 65 per cent of Kenya’s total exports and provides more than 70 per cent of informal employment in the rural areas.
  • The sector comprises of crops, livestock, fisheries, land, water, cooperatives, environment, regional development and forestry sub sectors. It also includes the development of arid and semi-arid lands.
